So you want to be a set designer?

As it has been rather longer than I would care to remember since I was at college myself, I have to admit that I am not up to speed with the latest courses (especially in the UK).  To help me and other budding designers, please feel free to pass any information you may have about set design courses in your area/country, and I will happily add it to this page for others to see.

Another thing…  You may think I work in a large studio with loads of employees and have opportunities for assistants to learn the trade.  Sadly nothing could be further from the truth.  I work on my own in a studio – just me and my computer.  I don’t have an assistant and I have no plans to acquire one in the near future.

If you are looking for a job as an assistant you are better off approaching the designer or production manager of a local theatre or the studio manager of a large design agency.
